It is open to Royal Arch Masons in good standing and is often considered a second step in York Rite Freemasonry.

The Grand Commandery in Ohio confers three chivalric orders: the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, the Order of Malta, and the Order of the Temple. While Craft Masonry is open to men of all faiths, the Commandery is an order of Master Masons who are pledged to defend the Christian faith. It is the third or capstone order of York Rite Freemasonry.
